Food safety: FSA survey puts pressure on retailers to reduce Campylobacter in chickens

    • THE latest results from the Food Standards Agency's year-long survey to investigate the levels of Campylobacter on fresh chickens show that 73 per cent of all chickens sampled in the first nine months of the survey tested positive for the presence of Campylobacter. Nineteen per cent showed Campylobacter levels above 1000 colony-forming units (cfu) per gram, the highest classification of contamination. Seven per cent of the chickens' packaging tested positive for the bacterium, although only three of more than 3000 samples of packaging tested were positive at levels above 1000 cfu/g.
