THE Food Standards Agency (FSA) has reported ‘positive shifts’ in slaughterhouses' compliance with animal welfare regulations, but says that more improvements are needed.
Publishing the results last week of a survey that it carried out in slaughterhouses in 2013, the FSA reported that 96 per cent of the red meat slaughterhouses and 96 per cent of the white meat slaughterhouses involved in the survey were found to be compliant with animal welfare regulations. This represented an improvement on the findings of a similar survey conducted in 2011, when only 86 per cent of the red meat slaughterhouses and 84 per cent of the white meat slaughterhouses involved were found to be compliant.
At the same time, the BVA expressed concern that the survey results indicated that the number of animals being slaughtered without stunning had increased between 2011 and 2013. It noted that its Government e-petition calling for an end to slaughter without prestunning had passed its target of 100,000 signatures and reiterated its call for an end to the practice.
