    Wie kann man die ursprüngliche Absicht der Zusammensetzung der berühmten Lithographie von Louis Marie Bosredon (Die Urne oder das Gewehr?) von 1848 rekonstruieren? Dieser Artikel macht dieses Thema zu seinem Untersuchungsfeld. Indem er die Verbindung zwischen dem Bild und den Intentionen des sozialistischen Künstlers und damit eines Teils der Pariser Arbeiterwelt beleuchtet, untersucht er die ersten Schritte auf dem Weg zu einem Allgemeinen Wahlrecht. Es soll nicht der allgemeine Kontext oder eine intellektuelle Debatte erneuert, sondern die graphische raison freigelegt werden. Die Geschichte des Materials erlaubt es, die Bedingungen und Abhängigkeiten zu finden, in denen das Bild entstanden ist. Visuelle Referenzen, familiäres und berufliches Umfeld, Ablauf der Veröffentlichung: dieser Druck enthält alle Elemente dessen, was die «demokratische und soziale Republik» fördern sollte.

    How can we account for the original intent behind the 1848 famous lithograph by Louis Marie Bosredon (The Ballot or the Bullet)? This article explores the link between the picture and the aspirations of this socialist artist. It does not only look at the nineteenth century Parisian working class, but also at the beginnings of “universal suffrage”. The archives allowed us to reconstitute the pictorial path of the caricaturist, going further than general considerations about context or intellectual debate. This approach that we call “material history” sheds lights on the “frame” of the picture, e.g. its circumstances of production as well the environment of the producer. Visual references, family and professional background, publication processes: this lithograph contains all the elements of what was bound to promote the “democratic and social republic”.

    Comment restituer l’intention qui a présidé à la composition de la célèbre lithographie de Louis Marie Bosredon sur L’urne ou le fusil en 1848? Cet article en a fait un domaine d’enquête. Éclairer le lien qui attache l’image aux aspirations de cet artiste socialiste et au delà d’une partie du monde ouvrier parisien, c’est revenir sur les premiers pas du «suffrage universel». Non pas renouer avec un contexte général ou un débat intellectuel mais dégager sa raison graphique. L’histoire matérielle permet de retrouver les circonstances et dépendances dans lesquelles cette image a pu être prise. Référents visuels, environnement familial et professionnel, trajectoire éditoriale : cette estampe révèle alors sa dimension première, celle d’un objet visuel destiné à promouvoir la «république démocratique et sociale».
