In the present paper we analyze the currentsituation of the teaching of Spanish in Serbia and theexisting teaching trends. Based on an anonymoussurvey, we present the epistemological attitudes andneeds of Serbian teachers of Spanish as a foreignlanguage. We also analyze the possibility of creatingconditions which would permit the development oftheir professional identities. We have reached theconclusion that it is not enough for teachers to beaware of the most recent methods of teaching foreignlanguages; conditions must be created so that theteachers themselves question their ideas on teachingand that they have the opportunity to become awareof different approaches which might answer some ofthe doubts they have.
