The paper points out the main phases leading to cybernetic ideas, through military research made during the WWII by scientists from different fields, and first of all Norbert Wiener, a mathematician with a deep philosophical background. Particularly the essay shows how Cybernetics ought to be considered as a generalized theory of information. In addition it investigates in depth the cybernetic notion of information, discussing the importance it still has for us today, trying at the same time to suggest a criticism, as well as showing some new perspectives, emphasizing the importance to restore today the importance of matter and energy.
