    The paradigm organising modernity is that of a questioning of the medium internal to the medium itself, an issue to which the artist tends to limit his meaning. This self-referential definition of painting as expressed by Courbet and Manet excludes, by definition, the painters of history from the history of painting. It is only at the rear-guard (Gérôme) or with actors about whom historiography has long wondered what to say (Moreau) that history could still be painted. In wagering everything on the subject, Gérôme invents images that are extremely modern, but completely anti-painterly in terms of their execution. In contrast, Moreau tries to reconcile the thinker and the craftsman. In all cases, the impossibility for all these artists to transcend the form/content dualism inherited from Aristotle makes it impossible for them to put history back sustainably at the heart of painterly practice

    Le paradigme autour duquel s’organise la modernité est celui d’un questionnement interne au médium, questionnement auquel l’artiste tend à circonscrire son propos. Cette définition autoréférentielle de la peinture énoncée par Courbet et Manet exclut par principe les peintres d’histoire de l’histoire de la peinture. C’est seulement du côté de l’arrière-garde (Gérôme) ou d’acteurs dont l’historiographie n’a pendant longtemps guère su quoi penser (Moreau) que l’histoire a encore pu être peinte.Misant tout sur le sujet, Gérôme invente des images d’une grande modernité, mais absolument anti-picturales en termes d’exécution. Par contraste, Moreau cherche à réconcilier le penseur et l’ouvrier. Dans tous les cas, l’impossibilité, pour tous ces artistes, de dépasser le dualisme forme/fond hérité d’Aristote leur interdit de réinscrire durablement l’histoire au coeur de la pratique picturale
