Employment: SPVS calls for vets to be returned to the occupational shortage list

    • THE Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) is calling for veterinary surgeons to be added to the UK's shortage occupation list to facilitate the entry of more vets from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

      The call follows publication of the results of a recent recruitment survey carried out by the SPVS, which found that ‘there is a significant and widespread problem with the recruitment of vets and especially for those positions requiring significant prior experience’. The SPVS's findings follow similar findings by the BVA, which sought information about recruitment issues in practice as part of a recent ‘Voice of the Veterinary Profession’ survey (VR, August 8, 2015, vol 177, p 135).

      The UK's shortage occupation list identifies occupations where it is felt that shortages could be sensibly addressed by allowing employers to recruit migrant workers from outside the EEA. Veterinary surgeons were removed from the list in 2011, following a recommendation by the Migration Advisory Committee (VR, October 29, 2011, vol 169, p 454).
