• Honours and awards THE RCVS presented its honours and awards during RCVS Day, as follows.

  Queen's Medal The Queen's Medal is the highest honour the RCVS can bestow. It is awarded to veterinary surgeons for a lifetime's contribution to the profession and their dedication to working above and beyond the call of duty in the fields of veterinary medicine or science, or related areas. This year's recipient of the Queen's Medal was Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior.⇓ Lord Soulsby Lord Soulsby had had a truly exceptional career, the President told the meeting, which was unique in its achievements in several respects, not least in bridging the medical and veterinary science worlds. ‘He has worked tirelessly to promote the importance of veterinary science to society and is admired not only for his intellect, hard work and his breadth of interests, but also his endearing personality,’ the President said.

  Having graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 1948, Lord Soulsby had been professor of parasitology at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, before moving to the University of Cambridge, where he was both professor of animal pathology and dean of the veterinary school until 1993. He had been a visiting fellow or professor at institutions in Australia, Poland, Austria, Nigeria, Germany and the West Indies. He had also served on many committees and advisory bodies, including Defra's Veterinary Training and Research Initiative, the Companion Animal Welfare Council and the Animal Procedures Committee of the Home Office.

  Lord Soulsby was elected President of the RCVS in 1984 and, between 1998 and 2000, he served as president of the Royal Society of Medicine, the first veterinary surgeon to be elected to that position. He was also the first veterinary surgeon to enter the House of Lords, …
