    • IF evidence was needed that the veterinary profession is changing, then it was provided by the overwhelming response to the RCVS's consultation on whether veterinary surgeons should be able to use the title ‘Doctor’.

      So said Stuart Reid, the outgoing RCVS President, in his address to the College's annual general meeting during RCVS Day on July 10.

      Reflecting on his year as president, Professor Reid said that he had begun his term of office with three aspirations – to consult on the use of the title ‘Doctor’; to explore developing the role of the RCVS on the international stage; and to continue to build on changes to the governance of the College.

      The last time the profession had been consulted about the use of the title ‘Doctor’, the response had been negative, said Professor Reid. This time ‘it was an overwhelming yes’. There had also been a positive response from registered veterinary nurses and the public – and the 11,000 responses received was the largest response the College had ever received to a consultation. ‘If ever evidence was needed that the profession …
