Una etnolingüística oculta . Notas sobre la etnografía y la lingüística wichís de los misioneros anglicanos

    Los misioneros anglicanos que evangelizaron a los wichís del Chaco argentino produjeron buenas descripciones lingüísticas y un corpus abundante de traducciones bíblicas. En cambio, sus descripciones etnográficas son mínimas y están diseminadas en las notas que publicaban en la revista de su propia Sociedad Misionera. Estas notas permiten argumentar que existió sin embargo una etnografía misionera aplicada, que conjugada con una lingüística semejante forjó una suerte de «etnolingüística oculta» de los wichís. Después de describir los métodos de esta etnolingüística, se presentan sus logros y limitaciones en la comprensión del escenario interétnico, la religión, la organización social y el chamanismo.

    The Anglican missionaries that worked with the Wichí of the Argentinian Chaco produced good linguistic descriptions and a rich corpus of Bible translations. On the other hand, their ethnographic descriptions are minimal, scattered in notes published in their own journal. However, these fragmentary notes allow us to argue that there was indeed an applied ethnography by the Anglican missionaries. Combined with their linguistic knowledge, this implicit ethnography allowed the Anglicans to build a sort of «hidden ethnolinguistics» of the Wichí world. This piece describes the missionaries’ ethnolinguistic methods and considers the achievements and limitations of their understanding of native religion, social organization, shamanism and interethnic relations.
