  • Resumen
    • The spinel LiMn2O4 has been used as a cathode material in rechargeable lithium batteries. An experiment for the preparation of such spinel substances has been designed as a three-week mini-research project for final-year undergraduates. The procedure involves a high-temperature solid-state chemical synthesis from simple lithium and manganese salts. The most suitable salt combination and the reaction conditions for the formation and composition of the LiMn2O4 spinel and related phases have been investigated by evaluating thermal decomposition data and X-ray diffraction patterns. The process is safe and aims to introduce the students to some aspects of materials science.
