Resumen de Theoretical Concepts and Applications of a Rotating Disk Electrode

  • This paper verifies the theoretical concepts and shows one application of a rotating disk electrode (RDE). This is a powerful instrument employed in electrochemistry, capable of controlling the transport regime of electroactive species toward the electrode. Students use the redox couple Fe(CN)63-/Fe(CN)64- to check the model and theoretical concepts that describe the RDE behavior. They also use the RDE to qualitatively distinguish between kinetic, mixed, and mass transport controlled regions in an electrochemical process. In the last part of the paper, an important parameter, the diffusion coefficient (D) of the electroactive species, is calculated: D(Fe(CN)63-) = 2.6 X 10-9 m2 s-1, D(Fe(CN)64-) = 2.7 X 10-9 m2 s-1.
