A gradient maker for use in the biochemistry laboratory was constructed out of plastic graduated cylinders or other easily obtained plastic items. Assembly of the gradient makers requires little time or expense. Details on construction and operation are given. The gradient makers were used to elute proteins from ion-exchange columns, and they showed a linear increase in conductivity throughout the gradient volume. These items provide an inexpensive alternative to more expensive commercial gradient makers.
