Víctor Manuel Parga Torres, Juan M. Covarrubias Ramírez, Isidro H. Almeyda León, Víctor Manuel Zamora Villa, Antonio Rivera Peña, Ramiro Rocha Rodríguez

  • The new potato cultivar "Nieder" was selected under the pressure of insect pests (vectors) and fungal and bacterial diseases in the Sierra de Arteaga region in the state of Coahuila. Nieder was derived from a cross-made in 1991 between "Murca" and "Nook Sack". This new cultivar is of intermediate growth cycle, it can be harvested from 100 to 110 days after emergence, 20 days earlier than cv. Alpha. The tuber is cream, smooth type with presence of superficial buds; its pulp color is also cream with 16 to 18% of soluble solids and from 95 to 100% colored chips. Nieder has excellent quality for the fresh market and had shown high yields in the Sierra de Artega, Coahuila, at the Navidad Valley in Nuevo Leon, and in the area of Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico
