Resumen de Territorio y paisaje en el entorno del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de el Escorial: planos y vistas desde el dibujo de Hatfield House a Guesdon

El presente trabajo se plantea dos objetivos paralelos: el primero consiste en reconstruir el soporte geográfico del monasterio de El Escorial, y las transformaciones acaecidas desde su fundación hasta finales del siglo XIX; y el segundo desvela tanto las coincidencias como las contradicciones entre la documentación escrita y gráfica sobre los territorios vinculados a él. Para ello se comparan de modo crítico las fuentes escritas con los mapas, planos, dibujos y fotografías existentes en los principales archivos españoles y extranjeros. Debido a la extensión de los territorios vinculados al monasterio –que incluyen numerosas fincas e infraestructuras–, y a la amplitud de un marco temporal que abarca casi trescientos cincuenta años, el desarrollo de la investigación se fragmenta en una serie de artículos de los cuales el presente está centrado en el entorno inmediato y sus características, desde su elección hasta la finalización de las obras. Los sucesivos tratarán tanto de las fundamentales transformaciones del siglo XVIII, como de marcos territoriales más amplios.

The current research aims for two main targets: firstly, to reconstruct the surroundings of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, as well as the changes that it suffered within its establishment to the end of the 19th century. And secondly, to reveal the matches and contradictions in the documents about the territories depending on El Escorial. Our methodology is based upon the critical comparison between the written documents and the maps, drawings, and pictures located in the main Spanish and foreign archives. Due to the wide extent of the territories, and also to the lenght of the proposed research –about three hundred and fifty years–, the results of the research will be exposed in a series of articles. The current one focuses on the neighbouring environment of the monastery, on its main features and characteristics, within the site’s election to the end of the construction. The following studies will analyze the essential changes in the 18th century, as well as broader territories and estates belonging to the Monastery.
