    Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) is highly contagious and affects mainly the respiratory and reproductive systems. The virus is endemic in countries of Europe, Asia and North America and signs of infection have been found in some countries of Central and South America. Losses with the PRRSV totaled 560.32 million dollars for the North American producers in 2005. Commercial vaccines against PRRSV (genotype 1 or 2) are available in countries where it is endemic. The general principles of farm biosecurity have been effective in preventing the spread of the disease by the herd. Some systems of depopulation and repopulation, partial or total, with or without vaccination, have been tested and have succeeded in eliminating PRRSV in affected properties. Serum-reactive animal or viral antigen in Brazil have not been found. However, the PRRSV circulates in some neighbor countries. The aim of this work was to compile current epidemiological knowledge about the PRRSV and its spread throughout the world, as well as to carry out a survey of the dangers of its introduction in Brazil

    O vírus da Síndrome Reprodutiva Respiratória dos Suínos (PRRSV) é altamente contagioso e afeta principalmente os sistemas respiratório e reprodutivo. O vírus é endêmico em países da Europa, Ásia e América do Norte e indícios de infecção vêm sendo encontrados em alguns países da América Central e do Sul. Os prejuízos com o PRRSV totalizaram 560,32 milhões de dólares para os produtores norte americanos em 2005. Vacinas comerciais contra o PRRSV (genótipo 1 ou 2) estão disponíveis nos países onde ela é endêmica. Os princípios gerais de biossegurança das granjas mostraram-se eficazes na prevenção da disseminação da doença pelo plantel. Em propriedades afetadas, alguns sistemas de depopulação e repopulação, parcial ou total, com ou sem vacinação, foram testados e obtiveram sucesso na eliminação do PRRSV. Não foram encontrados animais soro-reagentes ou algum antígeno viral no Brasil, no entanto, o PRRSV circula em alguns países vizinhos. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo compilar os conhecimentos epidemiológicos atuais sobre o PRRSV e sua disseminação pelo mundo, assim como fazer o levantamento dos perigos de sua introdução no Brasil
