Isopropyl alcohol and MgF2 have nearly identical refractive indices; thus a chip of MgF2 disappears when immersed in isopropanol. Addition of water changes the liquid refractive index and causes the MgF2 to reappear. The demonstration works well in a small beaker on an overhead projector.
