Sexual misconduct –particularly pedophilia– by religious ministers of various denominational affiliations is a high-impact social phenomenon that can be quantified. The very nature of such conduct, coupled with institutional patterns of denial, create special methodological challenges for researchers trying to access related data. This is particularly true where abuse by clergy is considered a cultural and religious taboo. For this reason, the availability of statistics to help evaluate the prevalence of this problem is scarce. This study is a preliminary effort to quantify sexual abuse by religious ministers in Mexico. In order to contextualize the issue, the first part of the study surveys available data and research done in other countries and cultures. Next, the focus shifts to Mexico. Using current statistics, ethnographic and case studies, meta-analysis of existing research, and empirical data, a preliminary quantitative approximation in major denominations is presented. In the process, statistical comparisons are discussed along with relevant qualitative data yielded by the investigation.
