A short historical sketch is presented of the development of linguistics since its birth as a scientific discipline in the nineteenth century, followed by a short discussion of the possible meeting points of anthropology and linguistics. Both disciplines have followed a specifically national pattern – it is possible to distinguish a British, an American and a French linguistic anthropology – so the three following parts of the article are dedicated to presenting the meeting points in these three national spheres, and the article closes with a discussion of the historical development of Mexican linguistic anthropology and its perspectives at present.
