"Un artiste étrange, fort étrange!": la reception d'Odilon Redon dans l'art espagnol au début du XXe siècle

    • "A strange artist, very strange". The reception of Odilon Redon in Spanish Art at beginning of the 20th century.

      This article analyses how the art of Odilon Redon (Bordeaux, 1840- Paris 1916) was recieved by and what it brought to the framework of Spanish art at the beginning of the 20th century. First of all, the relation between the artist from Bordeaux with the painter Darío de Regoyos, as well as the pianist Ricardo Viñes is studied. The first in the context of the Belgian movement, Groupe des XX and the publication of "España Negra (Black Spain)", the second during the last twenty years of Redon's life, when the two artists shared their experiences of painter and musician mutually influencing each other.

      Then, the article studies how Redon was received in the Spanish panorama of the first decades of the twentieth century, especially beginning in 1916, after the painter's death. Modern and avantgarde art critics, such as Juan de la Encina, Joan Sacs, Manuel Abril, José Francés and Germán Gómez de la Mata wrote about the French artist's contributions and sought analogies with Spanish artists. These writings, especially for the circle of the Surrealists, led to his being considered a precursor. Traces can be found in certain works of Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí, as much in the treatment of form in the transcendental reality, as in the type of imaginary vision that goes beyond the appreciable world.

      Finally the article underlines the role of the publications of the intelectual Spanish Republicans exiled after the civil war, who diffused the work of Redon in Latin America.
