  • Resumen
    • Greco for Picasso. Zervos and Spain in 1937.

The article retraces the conditions of the planning and the publication of the work by Christian Zervos, "Les Oeuvres du Greco en Espagne" published by the Editions Cahiers d'Art in September 1939. It places the author-editor's choice in the esthetic and political context of the years 1936-1939, marked by the civil war in Spain and the rise of fascsim in Europe. By taking into consideration the various exhibitions and publications focusing on El Greco and on contemporary art, the article highlights the complex esthetic factors, which filtred the background of Zervos' thought about the Cretan painter. He defended modernity, providing explanations in favor of Picasso, author of "Guernica", and cautioned against unbounded augmentation of the body of work by El Greco and pointed out the development of the efforts of the Spanish Republicans to safeguard works of art. Research in the Zervos archives housed in the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris has shed new light on the objectives of this publication by Zervos as a book of propaganda for Republican Spain.
