  • Resumen
    • Be "Cymbaliste"! Eugène Carrière's portrait of Verlaine.

Painted at the end of 1890, the "Portrait of Verlaine" by Eugène Carrière was originally meant to serve as the model for the frontispiece of the poet's next volume of poetry. However, between the moment of its execution and its presentation at the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1891, the painting was first used as part of a "small arragement between freinds" eager to promote their own personal interests on the nascent scene of Symbolism: namely Paul Verlaine (the model); Eugène Carrière (the painter); Jean Dolent (the owner); and Charles Morice (the go-between).
