Resumen de La globalización cultural: ¿crisol, ensalada o gazpacho?

  Lo usual es analizar la globalización en términos económicos o quizás políticos y estratégicos. Pero sin duda también las culturas de la humanidad se ven afectadas por este proceso de contacto y puesta en común. Yo pretendo analizarla en términos culturales para comenzar a explorar la pregunta siguiente: ¿hay una cultura-mundo similar a la existente economíamundo o la ciencia-mundo? Los sociólogos disponemos de dos modelos básicos para entender esa enorme coctelera cultural que es el mundo: el del melting pot y el de la salad bowl, el ?crisol? y la ?ensalada?. Un molde que reproduce una pauta previa, una fusión homogeneizadora. O bien el multiculturalismo de la separación y la diversidad. Pero a lo mejor tenemos un tercer modelo a añadir a estos dos: tras el crisol y la ensalada, demos la bienvenida al gazpacho. Es decir, sabemos que fue el fracaso (al menos relativo) del melting pot, el fracaso de la asimilación, lo que dio lugar a la ensalada, al multiculturalismo actual. Pero a su vez, esta convivencia de culturas separadas, el trasiego en mover y remover las culturas, el mezclar y remezclar la ensalada, lo que origina es un gazpacho, da lugar a una fertilización cruzada o mestizaje mundial, siempre in fieri, por supuesto. La pregunta que trato de responder es pues la siguiente: ¿estamos ante un crisol, ante una ensalada o ante un gazpacho?

  It is normal to analyse globalisation in economic terms, or perhaps political and strategic ones. But the cultures of humanity are also undoubtedly affected by this process of contact and sharing. I attempt to analyse this in cultural terms to begin exploring the following question: is there a world culture similar to the existing world economy and world science? We sociologists have basic models for understanding the huge cultural cocktail formed by the world: the melting pot and the salad bowl. A mould that reproduces a previous pattern ?a homogenising fusion? or the multiculturism of separation and diversity. But perhaps we have a third model to add to these two: after the melting pot and the salad bowl, let us welcome the gazpacho. In other words, we know about the (at least relative) failure of the melting pot ?the failure of assimilation? which gave rise to the salad bowl of modern multiculturalism. But in turn, this coexistence of separate cultures; the bustle of moving and stirring cultures, mixing and remixing the salad, gives rise to a gazpacho, with cross-fertilisation or mixing of worlds, always, of course, beginning to come into existence. The question I am trying to answer is, therefore, this one: are we looking at a melting pot, a salad bowl or a gazpacho?
