    Este articulo examina las fuentes del poder en la relación entre el propietario directivo y el capitán de un buque. El papel del propietario directivo ha sido minusvalorado por los historiadores, mientras que el capitán ha sido habitualmente descrito como el que detentaba la balanza del mando, a menudo con la asistencia de la ley marítima.     This article examines the sources of power in the relationship between the managing owner and master of a ship. The role of the managing owner has been underrated by historians, while the master has typically been depicted as holding the balance of power, often with the assistance of maritime law. But the role of the shore-based managing owner was significant and complex. With the use of modern management theory it is possible to see that the relationship between the two key actors in the business of operating nineteenth-century British sailing vessels shifted in different circumstances
