After the vogue of collections and the affirmation of the study of engraved stones during the eighteenth century, general awareness of their dignity and artistic value within the rich heritage consrved in the Galleria degli Uffizi was achieved in Florence at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The "Catalogo generale della Dattilioteca dell'Imperiale e R. Galleria delle Statue..." competed by Arcangelo Michele Migliarini in 1837, marked a turning point in the superintendence and the appreciation of engraved stones, an irreplaceable instrument for the study and knowledge of the Florentine collection up to now. The various aspects faced by this precious document illustrate the complex environment in which the catalogue was conceived, implying interactions with modern and contemporary historiography.
