Resumen de Sulla provenienza e il restauro di marmi antichi dal "Museo Piranesi"

Pierluigi Panza

  • Provenance and restoration of the Museo Piranesi's antique marbles.

On 28 August 2010 at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice were exhibited works by Adam Lowe inspired by objects engraved by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, from his valedictory collection of vases, candelabra, engraved stones, sarcophagi, tripods, lamps and antique ornaments.

The collection consists in 112 sheets on which are represented antiques or objects "all'antica" then kept in Piranesi's workshop at Palazzo Tomati, or in other Roman collections which at that time had in part already been sold. A book was published by Francesco Piranesi in 1778 shortly after his father's death. Some of the works recently exhibited remained at Palazzo Tomati until 1783, when they were sold to Gustav III of Sweden. It is now possible to retrace their sources and the sequence of their sales, while making some observations on their restoration.
