    El velo pintado (2006) es una historia de amor que se desarrolla en los años 20 entre una pareja de ingle‐ ses, el Dr. Walter Fane, bacteriólogo, y Kitty, una chica de clase alta, que se casan por conveniencia sin ape‐ nas conocerse. Nada más casarse se trasladan a Shanghái, donde Walter dirige un laboratorio del gobierno.

    Allí Kitty conocerá a Charles, un vicecónsul casado, con quien tendrá una aventura. Cuando Walter descu‐ bre la infidelidad de su mujer la amenaza con solicitar el divorcio si no le acompaña a un pueblo en el inte‐ rior de China donde ha surgido un brote de cólera y se requiere su ayuda. Se instalarán en las afueras de Mei‐tan‐fu. La relación entre Walter y Kitty no puede ir peor: apenas hablan entre sí, y mientras Walter tra‐ baja día y noche tratando de frenar la epidemia, Kitty se siente sola e inútil. Un día visitará a un grupo de monjas francesas que colaboran en el hospital y llevan un orfanato, donde finalmente podrá ayudar como profesora de música. La lucha contra el cólera será ardua: costumbres, religión y política se interponen en la labor del médico. Es entonces cuando Walter y Kitty comienzan a descubrir cualidades que ignoraban el uno del otro; finalmente surgirá el amor y la reconciliación. Cuando parece que el brote de cólera está ya bajo control, llegará gente de poblados río abajo donde no hay médico. Walter se ve obligado a instalar un campo de refugiados a las afueras de la ciudad, donde contraerá el cólera y morirá.

    The Painted Veil (2006) is a love story which takes place in the nineteen twenties, between an Englishman, Dr Walter Fane, a bacteriologist, and Kitty, an English upper class girl, who marry for con‐ venience hardly knowing each other. Soon after the wedding they move to Shangai, where Walter is in charge of a government laboratory. Also in Shangai Kitty meets Charles, a married vice consul with whom she has an affair. When Walter discovers that his wife has been unfaithful to him he threatens to divorce her if she refuses to go with him to a village in Inner China, where there is an outbreak of cholera and where his help is required. They settle on the outskirts of Mei‐tan‐fu. The relationship between Walter and kitty cannot go worse; they hardly talk to each other, and while Walter is working day and night, try‐ ing to stop the spread of cholera, Kitty feels lonely and useless . One day she visits a group of French nuns who collaborate in the hospital and run an orphanage, in which Kitty is finally able to help as a music teacher. The fight against cholera is arduous: customs, religion, and politics make the doctor’s work even harder. It is then that Walter and Kitty discover qualities in each other that they did not know of; finally love and reconciliation emerge. When it seems that the outbreak of cholera is already under control, people from downstream villages, where there is no doctor, arrive. Walter feels obliged to set up a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city, where he finally contracts cholera and dies.
