  • Resumen
    • Details of a physical chemistry laboratory project which involves the investigation of the effect of composition on several physical properties of binary mixtures of common liquids are presented. The properties examined include density, molar volume (including mean molar volume and the partial molar volumes of both components), viscosity, boiling point diagram and the thermodynamics of mixing (enthalpy, ehtropy, and gibbs free energy of mixing). The project requires only basic physical chemistry lab equipment (Ostwald viscometer, constant temperature baths, simple distillation apparatus, gas chromatograph for composition determination, and a simple solution calorimeter), and it is a convenient vehicle for the introduction of spreadsheet and graphing software. Specific instructions are provided for each part of the project, and typical student data are given for the ethanol-cyclohexane pair. Though each of the parts of the project can be done as a single experiment, the advantages of a comparative evaluation of the data for the several techniques employed in the investigation is emphasized. Suggestions for specific liquid pairs are included
