An imperial mughal tent and mobile sovereignty in eighteenth-century Jodhpur

  • This essay traces some of the uses of a royal tent called the "Lal Dera" ('red tent') by the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Abhai Singh in the early-to-mid-eighteenth century, a period in which this Rajput kingdom was attempting to negotiate its status as a regional power on the heels of the fragmentation of the Mughal Empire. It examines two key features of imperial Mughal tents -mobility and duplication- and also draws attention to the Lal Dera's dialogue with the architecture of Mehrangarh Fort. In so doing, it demonstrates why and how the "Lal Dera" became a crucial locus for the materialization of sovereign power in eighteenth-century north India.
