Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of toxic organics compounds has been intensively studied as an alternative treatment for wastewater, groundwater and drinking water. This work presents a simple experiment that illustrates the photo catalytic process. The experiment entailed preparing solutions of several concentrations of an organic compound to degrade, in this case sodium fluorescein. Aliquots of solution were taken and mixed with titanium oxide and irradiated with UV light of 354 nm, during continuous stirring and air bubbling. The reaction was carried out in a dark room and at room temperature. Some aliquots were taken to measure, by UV-vis spectrometry, the amount of sodium fluorescein remanent in the solution. The results obtained were analyzed as the photocatalytic degradation of fluorescein and the amount degraded was calculated.
