Em 1769 a tentativa de assassinato do governador e capitão-mor da Paraíba escancarou as fraturas e acertos sociais de uma sociedade forjada por estruturas hierarquizadas, mas sofisticadamente fluídas e permeáveis. O crime foi encomendado por setores insatisfeitos das elites locais da Capitania e nos permitem, séculos depois, utilizá-lo como mote na compreensão das interações sociais entre nobrezas da terra da América portuguesa e os oficiais régios incumbidos do governo dos povos e territórios ultramarinos. Um relacionamento nem sempre amistoso, as negociações eram frequentes e fundamentais à governabilidade portuguesa nos trópicos. Na capitania da Paraíba, as relações entre elites coloniais e os servidores da Coroa foram ainda definidas pelo contexto de anexação a Pernambuco, entre 1756 e 1799, revelando estratégias exercitadas na busca de capital político e econômico numa conjuntura jurisdicional tensionada.Palavras-chave: Elites locais; Capitania da Paraíba; século 18.

In 1769 the attempted murder of the Governor and Captain-General of Paraiba flung open fractures and social arrangements of a society forged by hierarchical structures, but sophisticatedly fluid and permeable. The crime was commissioned by disgruntled sectors of the local elites of the captaincy and allow us centuries later use it as a theme in understanding the social interactions between land nobility of Portuguese America and the royal official in charge of the government of the people and territories. A relationship not always friendly, negotiations were frequent and fundamental to the Portuguese governance in the tropics. In the captaincy of Paraiba, relations between colonial elites and the Crown servers were still defined by the Pernambuco annexation context, between 1756 and 1799, revealing strategies exercised in the pursuit of political and economic capital in a stressed environment court.
