This study aimed at verifying the correlation between the interdependent and independent self-construals (Singelis, 1994; Markus and Kitayama, 1991) and the feeling of embarrassment according to many social circumstances (Miller, 1992). The sample was constituted of 325 people, mainly female participants (65.7%). The instrument was administered to the general population (third of the sample) and to students; among this group, 87.7% were university students and 12.3% were high school students. They answered the Embarrassability Questionnaire and the Self-Construals Scale. The results indicated that the several dimensions of embarrassability correlated directly to each other, allowing computing a total score. This score correlated itself directly with the interdependent self-construal, and negatively with the independent self-construal. Women, more than men, presented higher scores in all dimensions of embarrassability. These results are discussed based on previous studies about individualist cultures, suggesting that the feeling of embarrassment may be explained by the image of self a person has.
