    The article analyzes the representation of indigenous and legitimizing their extermination in the South of Santa Catarina in the process of colonization in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. For this, use was made of the interviews in the present work "Stories of the Great Araranguá", the priest John Leonir Dall'Alba published in 1997 Through the interpretation of the speeches was possible to understand the role of three historical subjects present in colonization:

    the Indian the settler and the bugreiro. A) the process of occupation of Southern Santa Catarina, initially by lusos and Azorean and later by European immigrants. The following aspects were addressed in writing b) the memory contact and extermination of the Indians; c) the construction of the Indian in the narratives; d) narratives about bugreiro; e) the invisibility of indigenous memory spaces in the south of Santa Catarina.

    O artigo analisa a representação do indígena e a legitimação de seu extermínio no Sul de Santa Catarina durante o processo de colonização no final do  século XIX e o inicio do século XX. Para isso, fez-se uso das entrevistas presentes na obra “Histórias do Grande Araranguá”, do padre João Leonir Dall’Alba publicado em 1997. Através da interpretação das falas foi possível compreender o papel de três sujeitos históricos presentes na colonização: o índio, o colono e o bugreiro. Foram abordados no escrito os seguintes aspectos: a) o processo de ocupação do Sul Catarinense, inicialmente por lusos e açorianos e posteriormente pelos imigrantes europeus; b) a memória do contato e do extermínio dos índios; c) a construção do índio nas narrativas; d) as narrativas sobre o bugreiro; e) a invisibilidade do indígena nos espaços de memória no Sul Catarinense.
