    El presente artículo pretende reflejar la Historia de Nicaragua durante la última década del siglo XX y buena parte de la primera de la siguiente centuria. Para ello, mostraremos, por un lado, las causas por las que el sandinismo perdió el poder de un modo inesperado; y por el otro, analizaremos las pésimas condiciones de empobrecimiento y desamparo en las que quedó sumida la población nicaragüense, durante la gestión antipopular y estructuralmente corrupta de los tres gabinetes neoliberales. Asimismo, atenderemos a los moderados intentos del sandinismo de revertir esta situación durante su primer año de gobierno, tras la victoria en las elecciones del 2007.

    The article aims to reflect the history of Nicaragua during the last decade of the twentieth century and much of the first part of the following one, showing, in the first place, the reasons why the Sandinistas lost power in an unexpected way, and on the other hand to analyze the appalling conditions of impoverishment and despair in which the Nicaraguan population was plunged during the unpopular and structurally corrupt management of the three neoliberal cabinets. The attempts from the Sandinistas to reverse this situation were moderated during their first year in the government after the victory in the elections of 2007.
