Montoneros fue una de las organizaciones guerrilleras más importantes de Iberoamérica. A su poder de fuego agregó una extraordinaria capacidad de movilización popular. Sin embargo, sobre sus objetivos e ideología existen interpretaciones contrapuestas. Este trabajo intenta desbrozar si la orgánica montonera y, fundamentalmente la interpretación del peronismo que hacían sus cuadros superiores, conllevó a una deliberada dosificación de la información desde la cúspide a las bases, que hasta el día de hoy confunde, tanto a ex militantes como a historiadores. Los documentos de su conducción eran muy diferentes, en contenido, a sus publicaciones de superficie. Este trabajo se centra en analizar esos documentos entre 1970 y 1973. Su objetivo socialista aparece muy lejano de las tres banderas históricas del peronismo que tomaban como identidad política. El rol que Perón tenía en el proyecto de los primeros cuadros montoneros, aparece en un lugar muy diferente a la consigna “Perón o muerte”.

The Montoneros was one of the most important Left guerrilla organizations in Latin America. It had not only a remarkable military strength but also an extraordinary capacity to promote popular mobilization. However, there are different interpretations about its political goals and ideology. This work intends to analyse whether the Montoneros, and in particular the interpretation that their leaders had on Peronism, led to them to carry out a deliberate strategy of selecting the information that had to be passed to the rank-and-files: a strategy that confuses not only former members of this guerrilla group but also historians even today. The documents issued by the Montoneros leadership were very different in content from those intended to be diffused to the general public. This paper focuses its attention in studying the documents produced by the Montoneros between 1970 and 1973. Despite the fact that this group defined itself as Peronist, its goal of building a socialist society seemed to be very different from the historical political banners sustained by the Peronist movement. Consequently, the role that Perón played in the Montoneros´s leadership political project was far from the slogan “Perón or death” publicly proclaimed by them.
