  O presente estudo pretende apreender como é que, no período moderno, o primeiro sacramento era entendido como determinante da sorte da criança batizada e do destino infeliz da que ficava por batizar. A partir da liturgia e das constituições sinodais tridentinas será delineado o ritual de luto e o local de repouso a que a criança estava sujeita em Portugal, com ou sem esse sacramento.

  This study tries to investigate how the first sacrament was thought to influence the spiritual destiny of the baptised children and how it sealed the unhappy destiny of those who were not. I will focus on the children which were baptized or not describing the ritual of mourning and the place of rest in Portugal during the modern ages.
