For over 125 years the use of the Gates-Giidden bur to open the root canal orífice and prepare the coronal portian of the canal has been the modus operandi for dentists and endodontists globally. Only recently with the development of orífice openers/shapers and tapered nickel-titanium rotary instruments has the use of the Gates-Giidden bur been somewhat curtailed. Historically, the questions posed are: Who was Gates? Who was Glidden? And how did this specific dental instrument become named after these two dentists who practiced in the late 1800s. Even after exhaustive searches, the answers are still elusive.
