Santiago Ugarte Aurrecoechea fue uno de los grandes empresarios del sector vitivinícola de la España de finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX; creó junto con su primo, José Ángel Aurrecoechea, una de las empresas más importantes de España, las Bodegas Bilbaínas, cuya vida se ha prolongado hasta hace pocos años. Además de vitivinicultor, fue un hombre de su tiempo, y tal como correspondía a un gran empresario en los años de la Restauración, participó en la vida política en las filas del Partido Liberal. Fue concejal del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao y diputado en el ente provincial de Vizcaya. Intentó dar un salto a la política nacional en los albores de la Dictadura de Primo de Rivera (abril 1923), pero fracasó. Tras ser el presidente de la ANV durante los años veinte, dejaría un saneado negocio a su hijo, Ugarte Greaves, falleciendo en plena República (1935)

Santiago Ugarte Aurrecoechea was one of the great Spanish entrepreneurs of the wine sector in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Together with his cousin, Jose Ángel Aurrecoechea set up one of the most important companies in Spain, the well-known wine cellar, the Bodegas Bilbaínas, whose life extended until a few years ago. Apart from wine entrepreneur, he was a man of his time; in fact, as a great businessman in the Spanish Restoration, he participated in the political life in the ranks of the Liberal Party. He was town councillor of the city of Bilbao and member of Biscay county council. At the dawn of Primo de Rivera dictatorship, he would attempt to make the leap to national politics, but he would fail. After being the ANV chairman in the twenties, he bequeathed an upward firm to his son, Ugarte Greaves. Eventually, he would die in 1935 during the Second Spanish Republic.
