  • Resumen
    • A laboratory exercise is described which illustrates the operation of a split/splitless capillary gas chromatography injection system. It has been used successfully to demonstrate these principles to senior undergraduate students. Comparison is made of conventional split injection with the splitless mode, the latter of which is operate in three distinct ways. This leads the student to appreciate the effect of changes to selected settings. Results are presented and compared in terms of peak shape and areas. Students are encouraged to interpret these with respect to the processes occurring within the injector and on the column and to understand the use of split and splitless injection for major component analysis and trace analysis respectively.
