Resumen de Nuove ricongiunzioni epigrafiche ostiensi: Il macellum di Nymphodotus e Pothus

Filippo Marini Recchia

  • The article offers an introduction to an epigraphic study of published and unpublished documents concerning the macellum ostiense. In particular, this work aims at updating and enhancing information related to two freedmen Nymphodotus and Pothus, with more details on the figures themselves, their relationship with Augustus and the Iulia family, as well as the role in building the macellum ostiense.

Among the unpublished documents, collected and presented by the author, are epigraphic fragments related to the original inscription belonging to the macellum of the age of Augustus. Moreover, a new epigraphic connection carried out on the macellums inscription as published in 1953 by H. Bloch, and by him estimated to be of the age of Augustus, shows how, in fact, it is an historical inscription dating from the age of Trajan, that commemorates the building works carried out to restore/rebuild the construction.

In conclusion, the article deals marginally with the matter of the location of the macellum in the age of Augustus, referring to the most recent studies, which are inclined to exclude the traditional location of the building within the complex IV, 5, 2.
