  • Resumen
    • The distorted perspectives of Chambord.

This article proposes a detailed study of the hollow core of the staircase, itself lodged in the core of the famous double staricese of the Chateau of Chambord. The empty center of this concentric staircase, constructed in the 1530s, is formed by cylindrical columns whose bases and figured capitals are deformed, distorted, according to an incline close to the vertical. The perfect integration of these sculptures in a highly restricted space has, up to the present, prevented to the comprehension of their extreme originality.

The analysis of the comlex stereotomy of the six rotations that mark the core of this staircase calls attention to the veritable feat, both sculptural and architectural. It has not been posible to find anterior or even posterior, equivalents of these accomplishments. The premise can barely be seen in the renascent architecture of the Val de Loire, in particular the two staircase of the Chateau of Blois.

These realizations seem close to anamorphoses, those optical curiosities fashionable in 1530s. However, here they are carried out in three dimensions, -something unique. The author or authors remain unknown, as does the technical apparatus used for their execution. The insertion of a concentric staircase with its highly complex core equally necessitated several adaptations of the main double staircase, ultimately making a global analysis of the three staircase indispensable.
