  • Resumen
    • With the end of the Habsburg rule in Spain, the presence of Germanic troops in the country also came to an end. The composition of the Army of Philip V, concerning the nationality of foreign soldiers, reflected the new structure of the Monarchy, that is, troops from Flanders and Italy prevailed and also, for different reasons, from Ireland. Even the «Guardia Tudesca» or Germanic Guard, with a history going back two hundred years, was dissolved.

From this time on and with very few exceptions, troops from the Germanic kingdoms mainly came to the Iberian Peninsula, on the period covered in this chapter, at the service of other nations during the main wars, .i.e. the War of Spanish Succession and the Peninsular War. The evolution towards a standing Army of conscripts, together with the growing importance of the militias during the 18th Century, contributed to diminish the Germanic presence in the Spanish Army prior to the French Revolution.
