  • Resumen
    • The policy of hegemony in Europe of the Spanish Monarchy during the 16th Century was only possible with the support of the many lansquenets enlisted within the Holy Roman Empire. That was the case of many poor men in need of an occupation, due to the structural changes in the European economy, in particular during the second half of the 16th Century due to the massive inflow of silver from America. Thus, it is not surprising that the Catholic Monarch suffered no shortage of men eager to enter at his service. Problems only arose due to the desire of many Imperial Princes to get his share of the Spanish treasury and also due to some of them being interested in supporting the enemies of the Spanish Monarchy, for example for religious reasons. To use lansquenets in the Low Countries or in Italy proved rather «cheap» for the Spanish Monarchs, while transporting them by sea to the Iberian Peninsula involved additional costs, not to mention the difficulties for the lansquenets to adapt themselves to the Mediterranean climate.
