    L’article retrace l’origine de l’intérieur, concept forgé dans le dernier quart du XVIIIe siècle et qui s’épanouit dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, et propose une herméneutique de l’intérieur dont l’usage recouvre diverses réalités. En étudiant parallèlement les apports des évolutions sociales avec l’essor d’une culture bourgeoise à la recherche d’intimité, la remise en cause de la scénographie traditionnelle au théâtre par l’attention accordée au décor et la naissance du genre pictural des vues d’intérieur, il est possible de rendre compte de la culture sociale et visuelle qui a donné naissance à l’intérieur. Si la multitude des transpositions de l’intérieur dans la peinture, le théâtre ou la littérature peuvent laisser penser à une dispersion du concept, il serait néanmoins profitable de les appréhender comme autant de manifestations de l’intérieur

    This essay focuses on the origins of the domestic interior, a concept which emerges in the last quarter of the 18th century and develops during the first half of the 19th, and suggests a hermeneutics of the idea, given that in French the word intérieur has different references. By focussing in parallel on the development of a bourgeois culture in search of intimacy, the rethinking of traditional theatrical scenography by the attention paid to scenery, and the birth of the genre of domestic painting, it is possible to account for the social and visual culture that gave rise to the “domestic interior.” If the great variety and quantity of transpositions of the domestic interior into painting, theatre, or literature give the impression of a dispersion of the concept, nonetheless apprehending these as so many manifestations of the idea is productive
