La memoria biocultural

    En los últimos años se ha manifestado una tendencia creciente a valorizar el conocimiento tradicional de la naturaleza, incluyendo su manejo y conservación. Este conocimiento, transmitido en forma oral en aquellos pueblos que conservan su estructura social y tradiciones, constituye un verdadero patrimonio o memoria biocultural. Para los ideólogos y ecólogos profesionales puede resul- tar especialmente interesante conocer y aprender a valorar esta memoria biocultural.

    En esta nota comentamos dos libros reciente- mente aparecidos que se refieren al tema. El de Victor Manuel Toledo y Narciso Barrera-Bassols tiene un enfoque mundial y una amplia discusión sobre la importancia de la memoria biocultural y con ella de la etnoecología que sería justamente el estudio de esta memoria. El segundo libro de Eckart Boege, centra su interés en México y su énfasis en la relación que existe entre conservación de la memoria biocultural y la apropiación del uso de los recursos naturales por los pueblos indígenas.

    Ambos libros se complementan y presentan de una manera excepcional un panorama lleno de suge- rencias en esta época en que resulta ineludible buscar una estrategia de uso sustentable para los recursos biológicos y en general naturales.

    In recent years there has been an increasing tendency to place greater value on traditional knowledge about nature, as well as its management and conservation. This knowledge, transmitted orally in villages where the traditions and social structure have been preserved, represent a genuine legacy: a biocultural memory. For professional biologists and ecologists it is particularly interesting to learn about and appreciate the depth of this biocultural memory.

    In this note we comment on two recently published books that address this topic. In the first, Victor Manuel Toledo and Narciso Barrera-Bassols take a worldwide perspective and offer a far reaching discussion on the importance of biocultural memory and, along with it, the ethnoecology which makes up the study of this memory. Eckart Boege, author of the second book, focuses on Mexico and emphasizes the relationship that exists between biocultural memory and the appropriation of the use of natural resources by indigenous peoples.

    These two books complement each other beautifully and offer an exceptionally useful panorama of suggestions at a time when it is imperative that we find strategies for the sustainable use of biological resources and natural resources in general.
