Estos tres autores participan de un mismo contexto epocal, pues sus trayectorias vitales son coincidentes, y como tales coetáneos son objeto de similares influencias. En este artículo se analizan sus respuestas en relación a la teoría y praxis del realismo. El realismo genético (Zola) se basa en la relación del escritor con el mundo de su entorno, que aprehende por la vía de la observación y reproduce miméticamente de forma fiel. En el realismo formal (James) todo depende de la literariedad: es la obra la que instituye una realidad desconectada del referente, una realidad textual. Queda, por último, la perspectiva de la recepción, desde el lector. En esa dirección de un realismo intencional se interpreta el pensamiento literario de Galdós. Un concepto de realismo como efecto o como respuesta que debe ser experimentada, no como mera copia o pura creación inmanente. Realismo nunca en esencia, sino siempre en acto.

These three author’s lifespans and historical contexts coincide, and they are thus subject to similar influences. This article analyses their response to this shared experience in terms of the theory and practice of realism. Zola’s genetic realism is based on the relationship between the writer and his surroundings, understood to be possible to observe and faithfully reproduce. James’s formal realism centers on the literary: the work of art constitutes a reality unconnected to the referent, a textual reality. There remains, lastly, the reception of the work, the reader’s perspective. Galdos’s literary thought can be seen in this context as moving towards an intentional realism, a conception of realism as an effect or as a response which should be experienced, not as a mere copy or purely immanent creation. This is a realism that is never an essence, but exists solely in its action.
