Resumen de To Roosevelt Island (and Back)

Catherine H. Middlecamp

  • A year ago, I visited Theodore Roosevelt Island, a 90-acre preserve in Washington, DC. In hiking the muddy trail that circled the island, I had three encounters with children who also were on the trail. Each child taught me something. My experiences that day allowed me to reflect not only on my experiences in teaching chemistry in the context of real-world issues, but also on the challenges that we and our students face on our planet today. As we celebrate and make meaningful the International Year of Chemistry, we need to find ways to get a better match between our students, our undergraduate chemistry courses, and our planet. We all have ideas of how to do this; it is time to join in a common effort.
