Classifying artworks: categories of knowledge and hierarchies of valueThe classification of art requires us to reconsider the question of the hierarchical organization of the arts and to understand the value and the limitations of documentary classification systems. This article discusses the various orientations and types of classifications from this perspective, analyzing how aesthetics and documentation have dealt with ideological and cognitive aspects of knowledge organization throughout history.

La classification des œuvres d’art engage à reprendre d’une part la question de la hiérarchisation des arts et d’autre part à comprendre l’intérêt et les limites des classifications documentaires. Dans cette optique sont abordées les différentes orientations et modalités des classifications analysant comment l’esthétique et la documentation sont confrontées à des enjeux idéologiques et cognitifs dans l’histoire de l’organisation des savoirs.
