Reproductive efficiency related traits evaluation in dairy genotypes under humid tropical conditions

    • The objective of this study was to establish factors affecting reproductive efficiency traits in a dairy herd and estimate relationships between these traits with milk yield. Records from 1951 to 1989 from the Tropical Agronomic Center for Research and Education, Costa Rica, were used. Breed groups studied were Central-American Milking Criollo (C), Jersey (J), C x J, J x C, 3/4C x 1/4J, 3/4J x 1/4C, C x other, and J x other. Records calculated were 1288 for age at first calving (AFC; days), 3406 for calving interval (CI; days), and 4455 for number of services per conception (NUMSER).

      Conception percentage to first (SER1; %), second (SER2; %) and third (SER3; %) service were generated. The relationships between AFC with first milk yield (FMY; kg) and between CI with subsequent milk yield (SMY; kg) were studied. Inbreeding effect was detected for AFC (P
