Venezuela
An experiment in El Vigía, Mérida state, Venezuela, at an altitude of 65 m. The design used was completely randomized. The treatments were grasses pastures with and without shrub legumes (Leucaena and Gliricidia), with three levels of concentrates (1, 2 and 3 kg/cow/day). The stocking rate was 3.0 AU/ha for mixed pastures and 1.25 AU/ha for the traditional system using grasses. A rotational grazing system was used. Milk production was not affected by the treatments and reached 6.82, 7.20 and 7.03 L/cow with leucaena, gliricidia and without legumes, respectively. Weight gain were greater when the animals consumed shrub legumes. The use of legumes was greater than that of grasses. Protein content was 23.4 % for leucaena, 18.8 % for gliricidia and 7.8 % for mixed grasses, while it was 6.9 % for the average of the principal forages on the ranch. Yield for the same area was almost three times greater than with the traditional system using grasses.
